Forbidden Rice

Forbidden, or black, rice is a nutritious alternative to oats in the morning. If you remember to soak it in water the night before, it cooks in the same amount of time as your trusty bowl of oatmeal.

  • 1 cup forbidden rice
  • cardamom
  • walnuts
  • hemp seeds
  • banana

Place rice in a small pot and cover with water. Soak overnight. In the morning, bring pot to a boil and simmer the rice for about 5 minutes, until it’s soft but still chewy. The water most likely won’t all be absorbed, but that’s OK — drain the water or scoop rice out into a bowl with a spoon. Finish with your favorite toppings. I stirred in cardamom, and topped it with walnuts, hemp seeds, and banana slices.
